About SMDR

The Soil Moisture Distribution and Routing Model, SMDR, aka SMR, is a physically-based, fully-distributed, hydrological model which has been developed in the Soil and Water Lab for the last 10 years. Initially based on some concepts introduced by Tammo Steenhuis, SMDR has been through some numerous twists of implementations. Even if SMDR is still under development (it likely will stay under development if the main developer doesn't stop being so fussy), we feel it is time to provide potential users with a first “official” version. And to provide us with a way to keep track of the many modifications, but that's another story.

If you are interested in the physics behind SMDR, please check the Description section, where the main algorithm is described step by step. You could also download this whole section as a single document for easier offline-browsing.

If you want to know how to run SMDR, please refer to the How to section, where you will find step-by-step information.

The Applications section will give you some examples of, well, SMDR applications. You will find links to most of the papers related to SMDR, as well as some sample datasets.

Of course, you may want to jump immediately to the Download section, where you will find the latest version of SMDR, as well as some older ones kept for the sake of archiving. A beta-version of a user-interface, developed during the summer 2004 by Pete Burns, one of our REU students, is also available.

At last, the Tips section will give you some (hopefully) helpful how-tos about data pre- and post-processing.

Please note that this site is still under construction. Some links may not be available yet, the layout may not be completely optimized for your particular browser, but we hope you will find the site useful nevertheless. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions or comments, it will be quite helpful.
