Background
I got my Bachelors of Science degree (Plant science) from Alemaya University, Ethiopia, in 2003. From 2003 to 2007
I worked at the Finchaa Sugar Factory as Plantation Section Manager. In 2007, I joined Cornell University’s masters
program at Bahir Dar University. For my MPS project I did “Modeling of rainfall-runoff-soil loss relationships and assessing
the impact of soil conservation research project (SCRP) intervention on soil physical and chemical properties of Maybar
Watershed, Ethiopia” and earned an MPS degree in August 2009. Afterwards I worked with the Canadian International
Development Association (CIDA) as an irrigated agriculture expert until I left the organization to pursue my PhD at
Cornell University.
My Current Research Projects and Interests
I am interested in conducting detailed research towards characterizing and defining the governing hydrological and
terrestrial processes of watersheds. This in turn will help to develop policies and management practices that protect water,
soil, and other natural resources with the ultimate goal of sustaining a healthy environment. In particular, I have a deep
interest in studying the interrelationships between land use/ land cover change, surface hydrology, erosion processes,
ground water recharge and climate change.
