Research Topic: Groundwater and interflow discharge in Hydrologically Active Areas

The water in Hydrologic Active Areas (HAAs) originate either from water flowing downhill, interflow, or from groundwater table intersecting with the soil surface. The quality of the runoff water generated in HAAs is affected by the quality of the water flowing into it and the nutrient content on the HAA itself. Based on this fact, quantification of nonpoint source of phosphorus losses through agricultural land is important because HAAs can significantly affect water quality. The focus of my PhD research is examined phosphorus transport/concentration and losses from HAAs and upland areas located in valley soils in the Cannosville basin in Catskill Mountains in central New York.

About me: I got my bachelor and master degree from Universidad Autonoma Chapingo and Colegio de Postgraduados, respectfully. After my master, I worked for two years for the International Water Management Institute in Mexico in the Lerma-Chapala Project, and now I am currently a PhD student at Cornell University focusing in groundwater and interflow discharge in HAAs.
